Molecular Neuromodulation (MNM), established in 2011 under the leadership of A/Prof Tomas Björklund, is a research group within the Wallenberg Neuroscience Center. We focus on the development and application of disruptive technologies for in vivo gene editing (CRISPR/Cas9 and other technologies) and connectivity mapping as well as on the development of next-generation gene based therapies for Parkinson’s disease and related disorders.
We are currently looking for bright, motivated people to join the group both at the PhD and the PostDoc level in the fields of molecular biology, in vivo studies and bioinformatics. Please check out The Opportunities.
After a real team effort spanning four years, our BRAVE technology is finally submitted. The paper is placed as a preprint on BioRxiv at https://doi.org/10.1101/335372 . BRAVE stands for "Barcoded Rational AAV Vector Evolution" and the paper describes a novel approach to AAV capsid evolution. Enjoy!
On April 13, 2018 Patrick Aldrin-Kirk of the MNM team with great success defended his PhD thesis. Titled "Dissection of basal ganglia circuitry and DA grafts in Parkinson’s disease using viral vectors" this thesis very nicely summarises the efforts in the MNM team to elucidate mechanisms behind multiple forms of dyskinesias in Parkinson's disease and furthers the field of chemogenetics. Thesis opponent was Vania Broccoli, San Raffaele Scientific Institute Milan, Italy. Congratulations Patrick!
On March 23, 2018 Marcus Davidsson of the MNM team proudly and successfully defended his PhD thesis. Titled "Viral vector barcoding – a BRAVE tool for next generation gene therapy" this thesis describes numerous advances in the field of molecular barcoding and the in vivo screening of novel AAV capsids. Thesis opponent was Sergei Zolotukhin, University of Florida, US. Congratulations Marcus!
Over the last four years we have in MNM worked very hard to develop a novel technique for viral vector barcoding and the generation of highly diverse libraries for detailed assessment of biological functions in vivo. Applications of this technique are near endless with obvious applications in both connectomics and the generation of novel viral vector serotype. The road has been long and winding but it is now bearing exciting fruit. The first paper in this research line is now finally published in Scientific Reports. Congratulations to first author Marcus Davidsson! A couple of very cool applications are now well under way to be published. Keep your eyes open and watch this spot...

At the Society for Neuroscience meeting in San Diego, MNM representatives Tomas Bjorklund, Marcus Davidsson and Patrick Aldrin-Kirk presented recent progress on ongoing research topics. Patrick presented a posted summarising our recent Neuron paper on mechanisms underlying Graft-induced dyskinesias which raised significant interest. Tomas and Marcus presented the exciting development in the group on the generation of synthetic AAV serotype with unique properties at a very well attended symposium on the topic of "Genetic tehniques" (Chaired byTomas and Ben Deverman, UC Berkley)
