Research Supervision Course

At Lund University, research supervisors are formally required to attend a special training module to be allowed to supervise doctoral candidates. The course is given four times every year, two times in Swedish and two times in English. One of the courses given in English will be given digitally. In 2023, the digital edition will be given in the autumn.

Target group
Everyone who is or is to become research supervisor at the Faculty of Medicine. (You need to have a PhD to be allowed to take the course.)

Aim
The course aims to help the participant identify his/her role and responsibilities as supervisor and develop a greater confidence in the tasks of supervision.

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion, the participant should be able to

  • define his or her role and responsibility within doctoral education
  • explain how doctoral education and supervision is regulated and organized at the Faculty of Medicine
  • discuss supervision in relation to rules, regulation and praxis at the Faculty of Medicine as well as to supervisor ethics and the learning outcomes of doctoral education.

Scope and Assessment
The module is comprised of two workshops and, in between, a written reflective assignment, in total four days of work. To receive a course certificate the participant must actively take part in the workshops and submit the written assignment according to the instructions. All course.

Course schedule spring 2023

Course 1: February 7, 9.00-16.00 in Lund and March 7 9.00-16.00 in Lund. This course will be given in English. Note that the course is four days long with two scheduled days and two days’ work with an individual assignment in between. handed in February 28.

When you apply to course we ask for personal information to be able to create course participants lists, to be able to contact participants and to write course certificates and mail to participants. We also ask for data to be able to prioritize between applicants. The personal data is only handled by personnel employed at the Faculty of Medicine or personnel having a mission at the Faculty of Medicine

Content
Aims and learning outcomes of doctoral education, learning and development, the role and function of the supervisor, supervisor ethics, rules and regulations, the praxis of doctoral education at the Faculty of Medicine.

Instruction
The workshop is composed of short lectures and discussions, in small groups and in plenum. Emphasis is put on the sharing of experiences between participants. 

Number of participants
40. If this number is exceeded, ranking will be made on the following criteria:

  1. Main supervisor with a registered doctoral project.
  2. Assisting supervisor with a registered doctoral project.
  3. About to admit a doctoral candidate.
  4. No of years after dissertation.

If too few participants sign up the course might be cancelled.

Reading
Excerpts from law and policy as well as from research articles will be handed out.
