Courses and Seminars

The courses are primarily for those admitted to PhD studies at the Faculty of Medicine. Subject to availability, the courses are open to PhD students at other faculties and universities.

Admission to the courses are announced after application deadline has passed. Applicants who are not admitted will be placed on a waiting list for that semester. If a PhD student does not attend a course, without communicating it to the PhD coordinator in advance, the supervisor will need to pay the course fee, 5000 SEK. It is therefore very important to let us know as soon as possible if you will not attend a course you have been admitted to. If you cannot attend a course, please send us an e-mail on: phdcourses@med.lu.se

PhD students admitted to research studies July 1 2021 or later, should not apply for the compulsory courses separately. They will be automatically admitted to Research school in Medical Science, 14,5 hp/credits, where the compulsory courses are taken.  For PhD students admitted to the program after January 1st 2023, the Research school comprises of 13,5 hp. In addition to the research school, they also have to take the course Generic KNowledge and skills 12 hp/credits and one elective course of at least 1,5h/credits.

If a PhD student chooses to take more than one course of applied statistics II or fails a PhD course/module and has take it again, the supervisor has to pay the course fee of 5000 SEK for every 1,5 credits of the course.

Compulsory courses

  • Introductory course (1 hp, ) 0,5 credits for PhD students admitted from 2021-07-01.
  • Oral communication (1.5 hp) 
  • Research Ethics (1.5 hp) (3 hp for Phd students admitted from 2021-01-01).
  • Theory and Practice of Scientific Communication (1.5 hp) 
  • Knowledge in collaboration - how free research creates values in society (1,5 hp) (Only compulsory for Phd students admitted 2018-01-01 - 2020-12-01).
  • Applied Qualitative Methodology (1,5 hp) (Compulsory for PhD students admitted to research studies 2017-07-01  -  2021-06-30. If you have taken the course Laboratory animal science for researchers, the course is not compulsory.)
  • Introduction to Research Methodology (3hp) (Compulsory for PhD students admitted from 2021-07-01 and replaces Applied qualitative Methodology I).
  • Applied Statistics I (1.5 hp)
  • Applied Statistics II (3 hp)
  • Laboratory Animal Science (3hp) - compulsory only for those who work with laboratory animals in their research. Contact djurutbildning@med.lu.se if you have any questions.
  • Generic knowledge and skills (Portfolio) (12 hp) 
  • One elective course (1.5 hp)
     

Course requirements

  • For PhD students admitted from 1 July 2021, the total course requirement adds up to 28 hp /credits, after the inclusion of Research school in medical science as a compulsory course (14,5 hp/credits), and the exclusion of Introductory course fpr PhD students, Oral communication 1,5 hp, Research ethics,1,5 hp, Theory and practice of Scientific communication 1,5 hp, Applied statistics I 1,5 hp, Applied statistics II 3hp, Applied qualitative Methodology I, 1,5hp.
  • For PhD students admitted from 1 January 2021, the total course requirement adds up to 26,5 hp, after the inclusion of Research Ethics 3 hp as a compulsory course and the exclusion of Knowledge in collaboration - how free research creates values in society as a compulsory course.
  • For PhD students admitted from 1 January 2018, the total course requirement adds up to 26,5 hp, after the inclusion of Knowledge in collaboration - how free research creates values in society as a compulsory course.
  • For PhD students admitted from 1 July 2017, the total course requirement adds up to 25 hp, after the inclusion of Applied Qualitative Methodology as a compulsory course.
  • For PhD students admitted from 1 January 2015 both Applied Statistics I and II are compulsory. You have to take Applied Statistics I before you take Applied Statistics II. Only participation in one statistics course II is allowed. The level II courses all require a passed level I course or equivalent. For PhD students fulfilling this requirement through courses from another university must attach relevant certificates confirming this along with the application. These courses replace the course in Statistical Methods for Medical Research. These changes result in that the basic package of compulsory courses, including an elective course and the Portfolio, sums up to 23,5 higher education credits.
  • For PhD students admitted before 31 December 2014 the course in Applied Statistics I is compulsory, the course Applied Statistics II is non-compulsory. After the course Applied Statistics I you have fulfilled the compulsory part as regards statistics course. The Research Education Board highly recommends that PhD students apply for Applied Statistics II as an elective course.
  • For PhD students admitted between 1 January 2012 and December 31st 2014, the basic package sums up to a total of 20.5 higher education credits. The Comprehensive Generic Skills (Portfolio) has been extended to 12 credits and involve reflections within 12 areas. For a Licentiate degree the credit value for the Portfolio is 6.
  • For PhD students admitted between 2008-06-01 - 2011-12-31, the total course requirement adds up to 17,5 credits. In addition to the compulsory courses, one elective course (1,5 credits) is required. The credit value for the Comprehensive Generic Skills (Portfolio) is 9 credits and reflections within only seven of the areas are acceptable. For a Licentiate degree the credit value for the Comprehensive Generic Skills (Portfolio) is 4,5.

Teaching courses

If you are going to teach at undergraduate level, a foundation course in teaching and learning in higher education is required. These courses are offered by MEDCUL, the Faculty of Medicine's Center for Teaching and Learning

Non-compulsory courses in life sciences

The life sciences are rapidly developing, with new methodologies and biological and medical breakthroughs. The field has created entirely new and exciting fields of research that cross the traditional borders between biology and other sciences, engineering and physics.

In order to bring PhD students up to speed on these exciting developments, a cross-disciplinary initiative coordinates a package of courses aimed at PhD students at Lund University. The courses are designed to equip students with knowledge and skills that are relevant to their own research.

Postgraduate courses at other faculties of medicine 

All faculties of medicine within Sweden arrange postgraduate courses to which postgraduate students at Lund University may apply.
