I work in the group of prof. Anna Blom at UMAS, Malmö, Dept. of Laboratory Medicine, Division of Medical Protein Chemistry. We are mostly interested in interactions between pathogens and human complement system. My part of the work is connected with lung cancer cells and complement inhibitors, which they produce on their own. Also, we are trying to answer the question if complement activation may be beneficial for tumor cells under certain circumstances and so far some premises has been done. Moreover, I look at the regulation of complement cascade by some human viruses and try to identify novel complement inhibitors.
In the future I would like to set my own research group and stay in the field of complement system. I still see many areas which are not investigated and some practical issues, which may utilize complement inhibitors to unwanted activation during clinical interventions.
Getting the grant from VR means that I can concentrate on long-term goals without being stressed about prolongation of my position and think about new ideas to be realized. Four years is a long time to do so... Also, in my opinion, it opens up another possibilities of granting for particular, new purposes and maybe - to enlarge the group.
