Admission

Rules of admission

According to the Higher Education Ordinance, which regulates all state-run higher education, certain requirements must be met before a student may be admitted. These are as follows:

“Only as many doctoral students as can be offered supervision and otherwise acceptable conditions of study and whose studies have financing as directed in section 3 shall be admitted to doctoral studies. (...)"

The faculty board may only admit applicants to programmes of postgraduate training who have postgraduate studentships or have been given study grants for PhD students. The faculty board may, however, admit applicants who have some other form of study funding, if the board considers that this funding can be guaranteed for the duration of the programme and that the applicant will be able to devote sufficient time to the programme to be able to complete it within a period of four years for a Licentiate degree and eight years for a PhD."

New regulations that are to apply to enrolment to programmes from July 1, 2007 and onwards mean that before enrolling postgraduate students the higher education institutions must notify their intention by advertising or some equivalent procedure. It is possible to waive this basic regulation if, for instance, a postgraduate student is to take a programme in connection with a post with an employer other than the higher education institution.

Advertising PhD studentships

When a position for a PhD student that is wholly or partly funded by an institution of higher education falls vacant, the position is advertised on the following page.

Eligibility requirements

From July 1, 2007 a new credit system based on the European Credit Transfer System will be introduced in which 1.5 higher education credits will correspond to each university credit awarded today.
For enrolment to postgraduate programmes applicants must meet the requirements for basic eligibility applicants must have a degree awarded at advanced level or have completed studies for at least 240 higher education credits of which at least 60 higher education credits were awarded at advanced level, or have completed a corresponding programme in some other country or have equivalent qualifications.

Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 120 credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015.
Special eligibility varies from subject to subject as the faculty board determines. From July 1st, 2007 these requirements must be totally essential for a student to be able to complete the programme. Often these requirements stipulate knowledge acquired in higher education but specific vocational experience may also be required.

Students from outside Scandinavia

Students with non-Nordic first degrees and whose native language is not English must have knowledge of English equivalent to a passing grade on a Swedish 3-year upper secondary course. If a valid passing grade on a test cannot be verified, a TOEFL or IELTS test must be completed. The maximum score on the TOEFL test is 660 points, and the admission requirement for third-cycle studies at the Faculty of Medicine in Lund is at least 550 points with no less than 213 points on the computer-based test and no less than 79 on the internet-based one. For the IELTS test, the “Academic Module” must be completed with at least 6.5 as a result and with no section scoring less than 5.0.

Admission requirements

Only the number of applicants that can be offered appropriate environment in terms of supervision and conditions for study in general, and are receiving financial assistance as difined below, shall be admitted to graduate studies.

The successful applicant for admission to graduate studies must:

  • meet the requirements for basic (general) eligibility (i. e. admission to graduate school) and special eligibility (ie admission to a specific graduate programme), and
  • be deemed to possess the abilities required for satisfactory completion of the programme.

The Faculty Board is permitted to admit only those applicants to postgraduate studies who gain postgraduate studentships or who are awarded study grants for postgraduate students. The Faculty Board is, however, permitted to admit applicants who have some other form of financial assistance for their studies if the Faculty Board judges that this financial assistance can be ensured for the whole period of the postgraduate studies and that the applicant can devote enough time to complete the study programme in 8 years. See further under
Financial Assistance.

Postgraduate research studies after the last reform

According to the prevailing regulations in Sweden, each university must be able to guarantee supervision and financing of students for their whole period of study before admitting them to postgraduate studies. This means that sufficient resources must be available for them to complete their programme after 4 years of full-time or 8 years of part-time studies. The main forms of financing are postgraduate studentships and grants.
