Doctoral students at the Faculty of Medicine who are in the beginning of their doctoral studies.

Course Contents
After the course, the participant should have sufficient knowledge of statistical methodology in order to suggest appropriate methods for planning and evaluating common types of empirical studies within medical research.

  • Introduction to medical statistics
  • Descriptive statistics (averages, variation, graphical techniques)
  • Introduction to statistical inference (confidence intervals, p-values, hypothesis testing)
  • Comparisons between groups (parametric and non-parametric tests)
  • Study design and its relation to statistical power, sample size
  • Analysis of associations (correlation, regression)
  • Evaluation of measurement and classification methods (agreement)
  • Analysis of binary outcomes and data in cross-tables
  • Survival analysis

Teaching forms 
The course is held in English. Active participation and access to laptop during the course week is required.

  • Discussions in small groups
  • Demonstrations and exercises using the statistical software package SPSS
