Course description: 
The course is designed for new graduate students to help gain an overview of this area. The course is teaching intensive with both theory and practical sessions. It is recommended not to take other courses parallel to this one. The course language is English. The course requires attendance and active participation in all parts. A written abstract and a popular science summary must be handed in.

Content: 
Structured information retrieval in databases; how to write a scientific text: how to write for general audience; publication process; publishing models; the dissemination of scientific knowledge; the principles of reference management & hands-on exercises; the principles of Word; post-publication evaluation; basic bibliometry.

Aim: 
The aim of the course is to develop the participants understanding of the complexities of the scientific publication process.

  • Understanding the history of publication.
  • Understanding the organisation and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the Internet environment.
  • Understand the structure of an article
  • Recognizing and correcting the most common structural and stylistic weaknesses in writing.
  • Knowing how to submit a paper and understanding the scientific communication system
  • Knowing how grant applications are evaluated and having some idea of what makes applications successful
  • Writing about research for a general audience
  • Understanding the measuring of science.
  • Analyzing scientific problems from an information needs perspective.
  • Knowing about biomedical databases and other information resources
  • Retrieving, evaluating and citing the literature.
  • Using reference management program and word processing software efficiently for writing and formatting.
