Master of Medical Science

Master of Medical Science (Two Years) with a Major in Midwifery/ Nursing/ Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy, 120 higher education credits, Second Cycle (Advanced level).

The objective of the Master’s programme is to promote interprofessional, national and international advanced-level learning in the main fields of occupational therapy, nursing, midwifery and physiotherapy. The Master’s programme aims to increase students’ knowledge of evidence in health care, through the development of theory building and the provision of in-depth knowledge of scientific methodology. The programme provides the opportunity of specific in-depth study of a subject as well as broad knowledge of health care and nursing.

Eligible students have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (180 higher education credits) in occupational therapy, physiotherapy, nursing or radiological nursing or the same level of qualification in medical science. Prior courses at Master’s level in each main field and for methodology and general courses may be counted towards the degree. Second cycle courses within the midwifery programme and the various specialisations in the specialist nursing programme may also be counted. Selection takes place through academic credits and by the drawing of lots.

The programme provides a framework of optional courses at second cycle level with the opportunity to select courses according to requirements and prior knowledge. Each main field requires courses at second cycle level corresponding to at least 30 higher education credits, and an independent project comprising 30 credits (possibly 15+15), and methodology courses and general courses. The courses are provided at a modified pace of study. This facilitates cooperation on courses with other seats of learning. A flexible schedule allows students to study more than one course at the same time. Flexibility is also necessary within the respective one-year and two-year Master's levels, so that students can vary which term they study optional courses in.

Within the three areas there are 5 places with special interest in Gerontology. People with previous knowledge in Gerontology have priority to these places If at least 30 ECTS in Gerontology are done in the Universityof Iceland or in Jyväskylä University, you may receive a Nordic Master in Gerontology http://www.jyu.fi/sport/laitokset/terveys/en/Nordplus/nordmag.

A completed Master’s programme may be counted as part of postgraduate research studies.

The programme is under development. At the moment you can take courses in Movement Science (2 x 7.5 higher education credits) , some courses in Gerontology ( 35 higher education credits) and you may participate in the Project-course (30 higher education credits).
