In recent years scientific communities have come under increasing pressure, both from within and from without, to score high on supposedly objective measures of research output. Such measures play an increasingly important role in resource allocation.
The most obvious use is in allocating grants from funding bodies, but the purported measures may also have direct effects on the supply of talented researchers and students.
Aim
In this workshop we will examine the most commonly used measures of scientific productivity & excellence in order to make clear their respective strengths and weaknesses.
