Layer V pyramidal neuron in the cerebral cortex of a living mouse. The image was aqquired with a Zeiss MP7 system equipped with a Spectraphysics MaiTai 2-photon laser.
This animation shows two time-points of a hippocampal dendrite imaged with a confocal microscope to detect green fluorescent protein in the cytoplasm and a red fluorescent protein (DsRed2) in the ER. Overlap of the red and green signal is seen as yellow. In many spines the ER (yellow signal) shift in or out between the two time-points.
Hypothetical model of interaction between the ER and the plasma membrane based on our data that ER distribution to spines is regulated by metalloproteinase and gamma-secretase activity. Published with permission from the FASEB Journal.
