In a recent article in the journal Brain researchers at the LabExpBr together with American collegues describe a finding that potentially may become a stroke treatment.
The Sigma-1 receptor was identified as a protein upregulated in conditions of improved brain function. Its ligand, SA4503, given to rats as late as 2 days after stroke, significantly improved neurological function. Also the activation of the Sigma-1 receptor enhanced neurite outgrowth and molecular trafficking in astrocytes.
