Geriatric Psychiatry

Welcome to the Department of Geriatric Psychiatry. The department started in 1984 with the ambition to develop medical research end education in the field of dementia disease and Old Age Psychiatry in general. The clinicl and scientific approach is multidisciplinary, based on clinical psychiatry, neuropsychology, neurophysiology, neuropathology, neurochemistry, genetics and pharmacology, with the following aims:

  • Diagnostics, treatment and care of dementing illnesses, irrespective of the patients age, and with a special focus upon Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson's disease and other degenerative diseases, vascular dementias and various forms of mixed dementia.
  • Mental illness in the elderly population, often with a late onset, including organic mental disorders such as delirium and dementia, and mood disorders such as depression and mania, and anxiety disorders.
  • Development of clincial, psychiatric, neuropsychological, biochemical including cerebrospinal fluid, genetical and other biological markers for diagnosis and evaluation of treatment of dementia and mental illness in the elderly.
  • Pharmacological treatment of dementia, delirium, mood disorder, and old age psychiatry in general.
  • Electroconvulsive thearpy in unipolar and bipolar mood disorder.
  • Development of alternative forms of care for the elderly patients and patients with dementia.
