Musculoskeletal conditions have an enormous impact on the individual, society and health care systems. For the individual, quality of life is greatly affected, causing pain and disability, hospitalization, reduced social activities, etc. In Sweden, musculoskeletal disorders cause most physical disabilities in the adult population. A Swedish study of the societal costs show that the leading cause (23%) is musculoskeletal diseases.
The majority of the health costs result from fractures (especially osteoporosis), joint diseases (osteoarthrosis and rheumatoid arthritis), spinal disorders, trauma and tumours. This disease panorama is reflected in the activities at the Department of Orthopedics in Lund. Bone and joint disorders constitute a large group of different conditions with different requirements for care, where the primary health care takes a great part in analysis and treatment
The Department of Orthopedics has been an independent unit for more than 80 years and there has been an academic predecessor since 1940. We are especially pleased to have an education unit, and our own training laboratory, which together with the new Skill Center at the hospital, can provide practical treatment. An essential part of the education at the Department of Orthopedics in Lund is that each student is connected to a clinician during his training period. We are putting great effort into the practical part of the education, i.e. joint examination, punction, plaster exercises, fracture reposition. I hope that your education here will deepen the interest for the musculoskeletal diseases and that many of you will come back to us choosing orthopedics as your future career!
