Pure Purine Poetry

On Geoffrey Burnstock

Oh tell me Lord how could it be,

That though our cells make ATP,

It’s not all used for energy,

But sometimes is secreted free.

It puzzles you, it puzzles me,

While Geoffrey Burnstock smiles with glee

At the many roles of ATP.

By

~Samuel C. Silverstein~

Presented during the meeting held by the New York Academy of Sciences in 1989 entitled the ‘Biological Actions of Extracellular ATP’.

On Bertil Fredholm

Each year he teaches us some more

Of purine receptors that number four

A1, 2A, 2B and 3

He’s mastered pharmacology

On his studies we place reliance

To learn their role in neuroscience

About caffeine he’s done much work

To teach us how it makes us perk

He Chair’s a group of Nobel pickers

About the winner’s no one bickers

From Karolinska he has flown

Adenosine’s leader, Bertil Fredholm

By

~Joel Linden~

An introduction to Bertil – during the PURINES 2008 conference in Copenhagen, July 2, 2008
