Background
Increased knowledge is needed to better understand what factors affect senior citizens’ health and care. The percentage of senior citizens is increasing in society, which creates a demand for care. The government and Ministry of Social Affairs give government grants to establish a longitudinal database that will describe senior citizens’ health and their need of care, as well as how these needs are met by municipalities and county councils.
The project “Gott Åldrande i Skåne” (GÅS) started in 2001 and is one of four projects in the national project “The Swedish National study on Ageing and Care” (SNAC). The intension is to find answers future need of care and to gain knowledge about the impact of environment, lifestyle and previous diseases on senior citizens’ health and well-being, to identify risk factors for diseases and be able to evaluate senior citizens need in relation to health care and social care. The other projects are carried out in Blekinge, Hälsingland and Stockholm.
