Nordic Master´s Programme in Gerontology

2008 – 2011

This programme created by the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, Lund University and the University of Iceland is a joint Nordic Master’s programme in Gerontology, which has received the Nordic Master status from the Nordic Council of Ministers in June 2007.

NordMAG is a multidisciplinary Master’s programme (120 ECTS) in gerontology offered jointly by the Consortium universities. The programme has a special emphasis on issues relevant to ageing societies and it combines the gerontological expertise and traditions of Finland, Sweden and Iceland. The curriculum of NordMaG is distinctly interdisciplinary having foundations in health sciences, social sciences and behavioural sciences.

The main objectives of NordMaG are to educate professionals able to exploit, disseminate and generate gerontological knowledge with high relevance in ageing society and to provide research-based knowledge for the future development of this field.
Graduates of NordMaG will be awarded a Master’s degree by their NordMaG home university and, if they have met the requirements of the joint NordMaG programme, a NordMaG certificate awarded by the Consortium. Furthermore, Diploma Supplements, describing the nature of this joint programme, will be issued to all graduates.

The NordMaG degrees are
• in JyU: Master of Health Sciences
• in UI: Master of Gerontology
• in LU: Master of Medical Sciences (majoring in nursing, occupational therapy or physiotherapy with a specialty in gerontology)

All the degrees listed above qualify for PhD studies.

The first NordMaG programme started in the fall semester of 2008.

The next intake is April 15, 2010.
